Electrical Safety Habits to Practice While Operating and Servicing Your Portable Plant

share

Portable crusher plants have a lot of moving parts, and it takes electricity to run those parts. Adhering to proper electrical safety protocols is essential in preserving the well-being of portable plant operators and your fellow team members on the job.

Below are fundamental electrical safety habits to practice while operating and servicing your portable plant:

  • Foremost, to mitigate the risk of electrical injury, only qualified electricians should be permitted to work on any electrically energized parts of a portable plant.
  • Before operating a portable plant, it must be suitably grounded. MSHA requires the installation of a ground rod at its power source to prevent personal injury or death from electrical shock. According to MSHA’s Health Safety Analysis Center, “approximately 14% of all electrical fatalities occur from improper or inadequate grounding.” To learn more about MSHA’s grounding requirements, click here.
  • In addition, should a portable plant require welding, electrically energized components like batteries and other electronics should be disconnected or deenergized to avoid electrical shock.
  • Team members should always assume that electrical circuits are energized until proven de-energized by proper testing procedures, and only insulated and approved electrical tooling should be used when servicing a portable plant.
  • Performing lock-out and tag-out safety protocol on electrical and mechanical controls is absolutely necessary before performing any inspection, maintenance, lubrication, or other adjustment procedures.
  • Electrical equipment should never be serviced while it is raining or while standing in water or on wet surfaces until the power is proven to be disconnected.
  • Before starting any equipment, verify that electrical ground wires, motor plugs, and power cable connections are properly and securely connected. Be on the lookout for any pinched or shorted wires that may need repaired or replaced.
  • It is critical for team members to know the location of all power lines and underground cables on the job. Extreme caution should be used when working around these areas, and team members should understand the location of all main electrical shut-off boxes.
  • Most importantly, be alert when working around or with electricity. Any electrical hazards should be report immediately to supervisors when they arise.
