Crushing Rock and Being Safe Around Aggregates

Being Safe around Crushing Rock and Aggregate

When it comes to crushing material like aggregate, concrete, and asphalt, team members working on these job sites can face many hazards as large amounts of these heavy materials are moved about to be processed.

Even as the crushing industry and other organizations seek to reduce and eliminate these hazards, only proper safety training can truly prepare team members to understand the present risks in order to protect themselves onsite.

Crushing Rock and Being Safe Around Aggregates

On any crushing site, there are often loaders driving back and forth transporting materials. It is imperative to be mindful of these heavy-duty machines as team members walk around the jobsite. Large equipment like loaders and trucks usually has limited visibility for operators, meaning they cannot see things close to their equipment.

Likewise, team members who are operating the loaders and are responsible for feeding material like aggregate into the crushing plant should be properly trained to minimize overfeeding the hopper as well as spillage to prevent falling rock.

Additionally, plant operators and team members near the crusher should be vigilant as rocks being crushed could potentially be ejected from the crusher at high velocities, presenting a risk of injury.

Conveyors that extend from the plant and transport the crushed material to stockpiles also present some safety risks—team members should be cautious around these conveyors and avoid walking underneath them as rocks could fall from above and result in injury.

If you see something, say something—if a crushing plant team member notices a safety hazard onsite, it should be reported and resolved. Adopting the approach of being proactively mindful on a job site can be valuable in preventing serious incidents.
