The Importance of Impactor Safety Curtains

Impactor Safety Curtains

The flow of material like aggregate and demolition waste through portable crusher plants can be controlled by several components on the machine. Some of these parts are mechanical in nature, like the conveyors, while others, like the impactor safety curtains, are comparatively simple—but still effective in their purpose.

Despite appearing less important than their more mechanical counterparts, regularly assessing and maintaining the impactor safety curtains of a portable crusher plant is just as valuable as servicing more intricate components. After all, operating an efficient crusher requires tending to the smaller details.

The Importance of Impactor Safety Curtains

The impactor safety curtains are usually located within the feed opening between the hopper and the impact crusher. They can exist in a variety of forms and configurations and most regularly consist of loosely hanging rubber flaps or rows of stainless-steel chains.

Generally, the impactor safety curtains are installed to serve a dual purpose, the first being to physically slow the rate of material being fed into the impact crusher, ensuring that the machine does not become oversaturated with aggregate, leading to unnecessary wear on parts.

The other purpose for impactor safety curtains is to serve as a safeguard against material being ejected back out of the impactor into the job site. Because the impactor’s rotor spins at extremely high speeds, when it contacts the material being processed, it can create dangerous projectiles.

Over time, material flowing past the impactor safety curtains can wear them down leading to damaged or broken curtains, creating gaps and reducing their effectiveness. This can result in material flowing into the impactor more quickly, increasing the risk of rotor wear, as well as creating opportunities for projectiles to escape and injure team members.

Due to these avoidable risks, it is vital to regularly assess and maintain the wellbeing of your impactor safety curtains on the portable crusher plant so that unnecessary wear on parts is reduced and to preserve a safe atmosphere on the job for your team members.
