Aggregate Production and Demand Rises in 2015
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), 2015 aggregate production rose approximately 6%. In 2015, 1.32 billion metric tons of crushed stone was produced in the United States, versus the 1.25 billion metric tons produced in 2014. The states that saw the greatest amount of production were Texas, Pennsylvania and Missouri. The majority of the aggregates were derived from limestone, with 70% of the material produced.
The USGS indicates that demand slightly outstripped the domestic production, requiring increases in imports. The agency says domestic demand for 2015 stood at 1.39 billion metric tons. The increase in demand was seen from growth in residential construction sector and that forecasted demand would likely exceed historical average increases of between 2% and 4%.
The agency also noted that recycled materials such as concrete and asphalt are increasingly being sourced to fill demand with 42 million metric tons being used in 2015.
