Keeping Safe While Crushing in Winter Weather

Crushing Safely in Winter Weather

While operating equipment like portable crushing plants and portable screening plants, there are always opportunities to practice good safety habits to avoid injuries—it will be especially important to prioritize personal wellbeing in the coming months.

As the winter season arrives in the Northern Hemisphere, employees like portable crushing plant operators who work outdoors and who could be exposed to potentially freezing temperatures can best prepare by reviewing winter weather safety protocol.

Keeping Safe While Crushing in Winter Weather

The key to combatting the cold is dressing properly. It is recommended that outdoor team members wear multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing to insulate the body. Wearing tight clothing can reduce blood circulation to the extremities. Of course, clothing should not be so loose-fitting that it poses an entanglement risk around operating machinery.

The body’s extremities are most at risk of succumbing to cold stress which is why they should be well covered. A hat that covers the head and ears will help keep the whole body warmer. Insulated gloves and boots will do well to protect the hands and feet.

Additionally, team members should avoid touching bare skin to cold metal surfaces as well as getting wet. These are situations that could lead to unnecessary heat loss from the body. If clothing gets wet, it is useful to have extra layers ready to swap out.

As team members navigate the job site and portable plants, it is important to keep an eye out for wet patches and ice in order to avoid dangerous slips and falls. If wet patches or ice forms on the portable plant service platforms, it should be cleared if possible.

Throughout the day, monitor yourself and other team members for symptoms of cold stress, hypothermia, and frostbite. During breaks, it is beneficial to move to warmer areas and limit exposure to the cold weather.

To best prepare for the cold, team members should consult their employer regarding the company’s winter weather safety protocol. For more information on staying safe in the cold, visit OSHA’s web page on winter weather preparedness to prevent injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
